Session A11: Are You Game? Enabling Student Engagement and Motivation through Technology
Presenters: Mr Aaron Pang & Mr Tan Wei Zhi | Serangoon Garden Secondary School
In this sharing, the presenters spoke about how digital technologies can be utilised to maximise student engagement in both synchronous and asynchronous settings. This can be achieved through gamification of learning, bearing in mind the three key tenets of the Self-Determination Theory: Sense of Relatedness, Competence and Autonomy.
They shared about 3 tools they used and how they help to support students’ learning by:
Fostering multi-way interaction in the classroom (Relatedness)
Differentiating learning to enhance different students’ levels of understanding (Competence)
Providing every individual with an equal voice in the lesson (Autonomy)
What is Classcraft?
What have I learnt from this sharing session?
I am excited to explore using Classcraft with my Sec 1 Geography class when they receive their PLDs. I struggle the most in terms of classroom management with this class, and I can also see that some of the students lack motivation, so I hope that such a game-based approach to teaching and learning will promote better behaviour and encourage them to participate in class.
Plus point: Classcraft integrates seamlessly with Google Classroom! So I will be able to:
Import Google Classroom rosters and let students log in with their accounts
Attach Google Drive files to my lessons and messages in the game
Reward students for Google Classroom assignments and grades directly in Classcraft
Additional Features I hope to explore in the future:
Putting students in teams -- different characters in Classcraft have different powers and are in a way interdependent on each other (refer to first picture), so putting them in teams could possibly foster teamwork.
E.g. if a Guardian gets dealt damage to their health for misbehaviour/not submitting homework, the Healer can help to heal him/her. The Healer will lose crystals in the process of healing, so the Mage can then step in to restore the Healer's crystals.
Awarding points by team can also encourage students to regulate each other's behaviour.
Quests -- optional/extension tasks can be given as quests for students to earn bonus points, which can possibly encourage students to delve deeper and learn more about Geography! [Note to self: I can leverage on existing resources when assigning quests, e.g. getting them to respond on Humanities Read padlet or exploring our Geography Google Site!]
Random events -- super interesting feature; read more here:
